End of an Era...

Well, newsletters went out today to inform parents in Room 6 that I will be leaving at the end of the term. This is a sad time for me but also an exciting time with a promotion at a new school in Palmerston North.
The children have been told that Gael Hickson will be teaching in Room 6 next term. Gael knows all the kids really well and will be a fantastic replacement for me when I go.
I am really looking forward to the next 3 weeks that I get to spend with the kids and I know that we will have a super end to the term.
Production is all but ready to perform now. We are just working on getting 120 children on and off stage as quickly and quietly as possible - the kids are doign an amazing job and I know that they are going to be absolute stars come showtime!
A huge 'thank you' to all parents and friends that helped with cutting and sewing the suits - it was a large job and we are almost at the end of it! Just a few more suits to be returned to school and we are away!
With last week being our last week of practices before Production, it will be a bit 'mucky' with us nabbing the hall to rehearse whenever we can, so if a reading book doesn't come home, please grab one from home to read with your child. It is likely that the kids will be pretty tired as well as yucky bugs still lurking around - so lots of early nights! We will try to keep the daily timetable as normal as possible!

Barbaloots in full swing....

Practices are well underway in the junior school!
Room 6 have been learning their dance and practicing their singing so that they can shine in the production.
We have lots of practices each week so that we can get used to getting on and off the stage and learn our dances really well!
Thank you so much to everyone who has helped out so far with the Barbaloot suits and other jobs for the production so far, we would be lost without you all!
The suits are all cut (or in the process of being cut) and some have already been sewn which is fantastic! If you have some suits at home that need to be sewn could you send them back into school so that other parents can come and collect them to sew?
We are going to rock the stage!

Home Grown Goodness....

Olivia brought in some of her lovely home grown carrots to share with Room 6 today. We all sampled the produce and agree that they were delicious!
Olivia said "They took ages to grow, but they were yummy and I liked sharing them with my friends."
Olivia is also growing some spinach and looks after her lemon tree at home. It is great that Room 6 is full of green fingered kids!

Milo Cricket Skills

Two men from Wellington Cricket came in today to take the kids for some cricket skills.
It was a fantastic opportunity for the kids to learn, from the pros, about catching, throwing and how much fun cricket can be!
The children worked with Rooms 4 and 5 and participated in relays using some of the skills that the cricket coaches taught them.
They all had a blast learning the new skills and brushing up on old skills as well.

Sniffles and snuffles...

There are a few bugs lurking around at the moment so we have kids sniffing and snuffling their way through the school day. Due to the children working in such a close proximity to each other the bugs seem to spread rapidly through the class (even hitting the teacher!!!). Symptoms are flu-like feelings, general tiredness, achy muscles and, in some cases, vomiting.

We are trying to knock this on the head, so, if you notice your child is not 100% please keep them at home until they are feeling better.

We have completed our Geometry unit and the children have created some amazing cuboids and pyramids that are on display in the window of the class. It has been fantastic to see the understanding of geometry develop over the last few weeks, we have a bunch of clever cookies in Room 6!

What a winning weekend for NZ over in Beijing! It has been the hot topic in the class since Monday, and each day there is excitement over our ever increasing medal tally. By the sounds of things we have a few hopeful future Olympians amongst us!

The children in the team are well into learning their dances for the production. It is a huge task getting 130 5 and 6 year olds up on stage performing, but I know that the kids are going to wow the audience come show time! We certainly have a talented bunch of Barbaloots at Muritai School.
Thank you to all the parents who have offered to help cutting or sewing, the more the merrier, 130 suits to be made in 2 weeks, it's a big ask but it can be done, many hands make light work - just see me if you are able to help out!

Time to shine!

Week 3, Assembly.

What a show! Room 6 were just some of the stars in Assembly on Friday. There were certificates for many, as well as an amazing performance of the work that they had been working on with Ruth Hooke. 

The kids were only too happy to get up and shake their groove things in front of a very entertained audience. The Irish music set the tome, with kids jigging all over the stage and, the best part...they LOVED every minute of it.

Each and every one of the kids in Room 6 can be very proud of themselves. They all did a fantastic job performing in front of a very full hall.

6 kids from the class received their Reading Rocket Completion Certificates, which now means that we have well over half the class on their Spelling Rockets. It has been so great to see the children flying through their Rocket Levels and is really assisting them with their reading and writing in class. They have all been writing some amazing recounts, and we are hoping to get our podcast of our version of Roger Hall's "Longest Scarf in the World" online this week.

Week 2 - Disco fever!

On Friday night most of the class took part in the social event of the term (so far), The School Disco!
It was a night of funky dance moves, snazzy clothes and lots of squealing!
The kids all had a great time dancing the night away - so did the teachers and parents too!
It was a great opportunity to unwind after a busy week at school.

The junior children have started learning songs and moves for their production performance, it is an exciting time for us all!
